Cozy Country Redirect stopped working? How to switch safely
By Beacon Wave Studio · · 8 min read
If you searched for "Cozy Country Redirect not working" during the second half of 2025 you were not alone, and if you are now looking for a Cozy Country Redirect alternative you want two things: an honest account of what happened, and a way to swap apps without a period where nobody is redirected. This post gives you both. It sticks to what is publicly verifiable, and the migration plan works for moving from any geolocation app to any other, not just to GeoBeacon.
Where Cozy Country Redirect stands today
Let us be precise, because "abandoned" is a strong word. Cozy Country Redirect (by Cozy Ecommerce Solutions) is still listed on the Shopify App Store. When we looked on September 28, 2026 the listing showed a 4.5-star average from 310 reviews and pricing from $6.99 a month. The large majority of its reviews are positive.
The trouble is concentrated in a cluster of one-star reviews between August 21 and September 9, 2025, all on the app's one- and two-star review page. On August 21 a merchant wrote that it "suddenly stopped working on all 3 of our stores" and that the "security certificate is expired." On August 27 another wrote "Developer abandoned the app. Their certificate is out of date and the app is not working." On August 28: "Introduced SSL certificate issue showing shop as 'unsafe' to customers." On August 29 a long-time user described "occasional short periods of downtime due to an expired SSL certificate" in the past and a longer episode that time. On September 9: "SSL Certificate expired a couple of weeks ago and there has been no communication from the developer." An undated review from the same period mentions "a popup switcher blocking checkout."
Those are the merchants' words, not ours. We cannot confirm what happened on the vendor's servers, and the certificate may well have been renewed since. What the reviews do show is the failure mode: the app's script is loaded from the vendor's own host, so when that host has a problem, every store that uses it has the problem at the same time. Earlier reviews on the same page point the same way: a two-star review dated January 23, 2024 says that during high-traffic events the site "waits for a long time trying to load unavailable scripts", and an undated two-star review says the app "stopped working silently on more than one occasion due to hosting issues."
First, check whether it is really the app
Before migrating, confirm the diagnosis. Open your storefront in a private window with the developer tools Network panel open and reload. Look for requests to a domain that is not your store and not cdn.shopify.com. If one of them fails with a certificate error, a timeout or a non-200 status, the app that owns that script is down for your shoppers too. If all requests succeed and the redirect still does not fire, the problem is more likely configuration; our ten-step redirect troubleshooting checklist walks through that case. Also look at the browser console for a warning about the page being served over http or mixing insecure content, which is what one of the reviews above describes.
What to look for in a replacement
The August 2025 episode suggests three questions to ask of any geolocation app:
- Where does the storefront script load from? Shopify's theme app extensions are versioned and hosted on Shopify's CDN, so the vendor's own uptime is not in the path of your page load. An app that still asks you to paste a script tag into
theme.liquidis loading from the vendor's host. - What happens when the vendor is unavailable? If the country lookup is a call to the vendor's API, an outage means either no redirects or a slow page, depending on how the script waits. Ask, or test by blocking the vendor's domain in the developer tools.
- Does it stay off checkout? A popup that appears on the checkout page is not just annoying; Shopify apps do not control checkout on standard plans, so anything appearing there is a sign of a script running where it should not.
Migrating without a redirect gap
The mistake is to uninstall first and install second. Do it the other way round and the window without coverage is seconds long. The steps below use GeoBeacon as the example replacement, but the shape is the same for any app.
- Write down the current rules. For each country or group of countries, note where it goes: a Shopify Market (country and language) or a separate store URL, and whether the current app redirects automatically or asks first. Note any excluded pages and how long a shopper's choice is remembered.
- Install the replacement while the old app keeps running. Installing GeoBeacon changes nothing on your storefront: the app is switched off until you turn it on in the Behaviour page and enable its app embed in the theme editor. Both switches have to be on before shoppers see anything.
- Recreate the rules. In GeoBeacon's Rules page, "Generate rules from markets" creates one rule per active Shopify Market and fills in your other store domains as known hosts. Edit the generated rules to match your notes, or add URL rules for separate stores with "keep the page path" if you want
/products/xto land on/products/xin the other store. - Choose popup or redirect and the memory window. Set the mode, the popup text (with
{country}and{target}placeholders), position and colours, and how many days a shopper's choice is remembered. - Test before switching. Turn the old app off (or put it in a test mode if it has one) for a few minutes, enable GeoBeacon, and open your store with
?geobeacon=CA,?geobeacon=DEand so on for each rule. The simulated visits do not write anything to your browser's remembered choice, so you can repeat them. Add?geobeacon=offto confirm the embed can be silenced. - Uninstall the old app and clean up. Shopify's uninstalling apps guidance reminds you that some apps leave theme code behind and that uninstalling a paid app cancels future recurring charges but may still bill the current cycle. Search your theme for the old app's name and remove any leftover snippets or script tags.
- Watch for a day. Check the Network panel once more from a couple of countries (a VPN, or a colleague abroad) and look at your analytics for traffic that lands on the wrong regional store.
How GeoBeacon is built differently
GeoBeacon exists partly because of failure modes like the one described above, so it is worth saying plainly what is and is not in the path of your page load. The storefront script is a theme app embed served from Shopify's CDN. To find out where a shopper is, it asks your own store's browsing_context_suggestions.json endpoint, the same one Shopify themes use to suggest a country, and caches the answer in the shopper's browser for six hours. It makes no request to Beacon Wave Studio's servers during a page view. If the lookup fails for any reason, the script logs nothing and does nothing; the page renders as if the app were not installed. Your rules live in an app-owned metafield in your own store, and nothing is written to your theme files, so uninstalling leaves no residue.
The script loads with defer, so it never blocks the HTML from parsing, and only runs after the document is ready. The trade-off is that in redirect mode a shopper can briefly see the original page before being moved; if that matters more to you than resilience, Shopify's own automatic redirection happens server-side and is worth a look first. The GeoBeacon landing page summarises the setup in three steps, and our article on per-visitor pricing explains why the same architecture also means there is nothing to meter.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cozy Country Redirect still available on the Shopify App Store?
Yes. When we checked on September 28, 2026 the listing at apps.shopify.com/cozy-country-redirect was live, showed a 4.5-star average across 310 reviews and a starting price of $6.99 per month. The reviews described here are the one- and two-star subset; read the full page and form your own view.
Why did Cozy Country Redirect stop working in August 2025?
We only know what merchants wrote publicly. Several one-star reviews dated August 21 to September 9, 2025 report that the app's script host had an expired security certificate, that the redirect stopped, and that support could not be reached. We have not verified the cause ourselves and the vendor may have fixed it since.
Will switching geolocation apps leave a gap where nobody is redirected?
Only if you uninstall first. Install and configure the replacement while the old app is still running but disabled or in test mode, test it with the new app's simulation parameter, enable the new one, then uninstall the old one. The window without coverage is the few seconds between the two clicks.
Do I have to remove code from my theme when I uninstall a geolocation app?
Check. Shopify's uninstall guidance notes that some apps add theme code that is not removed automatically. Apps built as theme app extensions, including GeoBeacon, inject nothing into your theme files; the embed simply disappears from the theme editor when the app is removed. Older apps or manual installs may have left a snippet or script tag you need to delete by hand.
