Shopify Geolocation app deprecated: do you still need one?

Shopify's free Geolocation app was the default answer to "how do I send shoppers to the right country?" for years, so its removal left a lot of merchants asking whether they need a Shopify Geolocation app replacement at all, or whether Shopify Markets now covers it. The honest answer is: it depends on your domains. This guide sets out what Shopify does natively today, the three situations it explicitly leaves to third-party apps, and how to decide, without overselling what an app like GeoBeacon adds.

What actually happened

According to Shopify's changelog entry, the Geolocation app was sunset on March 24, 2025. Shopify's reasoning was that platform changes had "reduced the need for Geolocation app's consent-based localization feature" for stores using dedicated or shared domains, and it lists three of them: an expanded automatic redirection feature, automatic browser-language redirection, and consolidation of GeoIP detection into the platform. The App Store listing at apps.shopify.com/geolocation now reads "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store."

The same changelog entry contains the sentence that matters for European sellers: "If you sell to customers in the European Union via an EU top-level domain, e.g. example.fr or example.de, you will still require a consent-based strategy to redirect buyers", and Shopify encourages those merchants to look at third-party apps. So this was not "you never need a geolocation app again". It was "most stores on .com don't, some stores do".

What Shopify Markets does natively

The feature that replaced the app lives under Online Store > Preferences > Automatic redirection. With the Country/region setting on:

  • Markets with a dedicated domain, subdomain or subfolder get a real redirect: a Canadian shopper arriving on your .com is sent to your .ca (or /en-ca). Content on dedicated domains is indexed by search engines.
  • Markets that share a domain are not redirected anywhere; the page simply shows the currency and language of the resolved market. Shopify notes that this shared content is not indexed separately.
  • A separate Language setting switches to the shopper's browser language when that language is added, assigned to the market, translated and published.
  • Redirection happens on the first page of a visit, ignores search engine crawlers, and respects a country the shopper chose manually in your theme's selector, per the localization documentation. That documentation also warns that IP geolocation is imprecise for VPN, corporate and some mobile traffic, and recommends keeping selectors in your theme.
  • Shoppers from a country outside all your active markets get the backup region experience: they can browse but cannot check out.

If your international setup is one store, one or more markets, and either subfolders or dedicated domains outside the EU, that list is probably everything you were using the Geolocation app for. Turn the setting on and stop reading.

The three gaps Shopify leaves to apps

1. EU country-code domains

Shopify's automatic redirection page is explicit: "customers from the EU who access a localized experience with an EU country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) aren't automatically redirected", and it lists the affected TLDs from .at to .eu. A French shopper landing on your .de store stays there unless something asks them whether they would like to switch. Shopify's recommendation is a third-party app that offers a recommendation the shopper can accept, which is what the old Geolocation app did (its archived help page describes recommendations that were not shown again for 14 days after being accepted or dismissed).

2. Separate stores

Automatic redirection moves shoppers between markets of the same store. If you run separate Shopify stores per region, for the reasons covered in Markets vs separate stores, nothing native will send a German visitor from your US store to your EU store. You need a redirect rule that targets another domain.

3. Asking instead of forcing

Some merchants do not want a silent redirect even where Shopify allows it: travellers, expats and gift buyers are exactly the shoppers a hard redirect gets wrong, and Shopify's own documentation acknowledges the VPN and roaming cases. A recommendation with your own wording, on a shared .com domain, is not something Markets offers.

Native Markets vs GeoBeacon, feature by feature

The table below is deliberately conservative. Where Shopify does something natively, an app adds nothing, and we say so.

NeedShopify Markets (native)GeoBeacon
Detect the shopper's countryYes, IP-based, server-sideReads Shopify's detection from the browser; no separate lookup
Redirect to a market's domain or subfolderYes, on first page viewYes, via Shopify's localization form, after the page loads
Switch currency, prices, duties, translationsYes; this is what Markets isNot a GeoBeacon feature; the market switch brings them along
Consent popup on EU ccTLDsNo, by designYes: popup mode with your own text, colours and position
Redirect to a separate Shopify storeNoYes, URL rules with optional path preservation
Remember the shopper's choiceYes for the theme selectorYes, in the browser, for a number of days you set
Exclude checkout, cart, account pagesNot applicableAlways excluded, plus your own path list
Test as another country without a VPNNoYes, ?geobeacon=DE
hreflang, sitemaps, SEO signalsYes for dedicated domains and subfoldersNo; see our SEO guide below

How GeoBeacon fits in, and what it is not

GeoBeacon is a theme app embed. On each storefront page it asks your own store which country Shopify has detected, the same endpoint your theme's "You're shopping in…" banner uses, compares it with the rules you set in the app, and either shows a popup or performs the switch. A market rule sends the shopper through Shopify's localization form, so currency, language and pricing change exactly as if they had used the country selector, and Shopify records the choice. A URL rule sends them to another store, optionally keeping the page path. Rules can be generated from your active markets in one click and edited from there.

It is not a replacement for Markets itself. It does not convert currency, translate content or add hreflang tags; those come from your Markets configuration, and our guide on redirecting without hurting SEO explains how to keep them intact. It runs only on the Online Store channel, works at country level only, and, because it runs after the page loads, a redirected shopper may glimpse the original page first. If Shopify's server-side redirect covers your case, use it; the situations where GeoBeacon earns its place are the three gaps above.

A decision in four questions

  1. Do all your regions live in one store as Markets? If no, you need an app for the cross-store redirect.
  2. Do any of your markets use an EU country-code domain? If yes, Shopify will not redirect EU visitors on those domains and recommends a consent-based app.
  3. Are you happy with a silent redirect? If you would rather ask, Markets has no popup.
  4. If you answered yes, no and yes: turn on Shopify's automatic redirection and skip the app entirely.

If you land on "I need an app", the GeoBeacon landing page walks through the three-step setup, and there is no per-visitor charge to weigh against the decision.

Frequently asked questions

When was the Shopify Geolocation app removed?

Shopify's changelog states the Geolocation app was sunset on March 24, 2025. Its App Store page now says the app is not currently available and directs support questions to Shopify.

Does Shopify Markets redirect customers automatically without an app?

Yes, for markets that have their own domain, subdomain or subfolder. Turn on Country/region redirection under Online Store > Preferences > Automatic redirection and Shopify sends first-time visitors to the URL of their resolved market. A separate Language setting switches to the visitor's browser language when that language is published for the market.

Why do EU stores still need a geolocation app?

Shopify does not automatically redirect EU visitors who land on an EU country-code domain such as .de or .fr, to comply with local legislation. Shopify's own documentation says to use a third-party app to recommend a country or region so those visitors can choose. A popup-style suggestion is the pattern the old Geolocation app used and the one GeoBeacon's popup mode provides.

Can Shopify Markets redirect shoppers to a different Shopify store?

No. Automatic redirection moves shoppers between the markets of one store. If you run separate stores for different regions (expansion stores), you need a redirect that can send a country to another domain and ideally keep the page path. That is one of the things GeoBeacon's URL rules do.

Is GeoBeacon a drop-in replacement for the Shopify Geolocation app?

For the country and language recommendation popup, yes: you write the message, choose colours and position, and the shopper's choice is remembered in their browser for as long as you set. GeoBeacon also adds automatic redirect mode and redirects to separate stores. It does not add currency conversion, hreflang or theme translations; those remain Shopify Markets features.
