Shopify Canvas and GeoBeacon: what works today
By Beacon Wave Studio · · 3 min read
On October 1, 2026 Shopify introduced Canvas, a new way to design a store: you describe the brand and Sidekick builds and edits the theme for you. It is in early access for some stores and sits alongside the theme editor you already know, which has not gone anywhere. If you use GeoBeacon, or are considering it, here is what Canvas changes today and what it does not.
App embeds are not available in Canvas yet
GeoBeacon runs on your storefront as a theme app embed, the small switch you turn on under App embeds in the theme editor. Shopify's Canvas documentation is explicit that you can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas yet. So on a theme that lives in Canvas, the GeoBeacon embed cannot be switched on, and the "open the theme editor" links in the app will not help, because a Canvas theme only opens in Canvas.
Shopify has said that support for app blocks and app embeds is coming before Canvas becomes the default editor, and that apps will not need changes for it. GeoBeacon already follows Shopify's theme app extension model, so there is nothing for you to reinstall when that happens.
One more line from Shopify's requirements page deserves a precise reading: Canvas does not support Markets yet. That refers to customising a theme per market inside Canvas. It has nothing to do with the Shopify Markets data GeoBeacon reads, so your rules and market destinations keep working exactly as before on any theme where the embed is enabled.
How to tell if a theme is a Canvas theme
Go to Online Store > Themes. Three things produce a Canvas theme: clicking New on the Themes page, choosing Duplicate in Canvas on an existing theme, or editing a theme that already carries the badge. A Canvas theme shows a Canvas badge in the list, and its Edit theme button opens Canvas rather than the theme editor. Themes without the badge behave as they always have. Two other details from Shopify's docs are worth knowing before you duplicate: Canvas works only with Shopify-developed themes such as Dawn and Horizon and with custom themes, not with third-party Theme Store themes, and a theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates.
The workaround
Keep GeoBeacon on a theme without the badge. In practice that means one of two things:
- Use your original theme. Duplicate in Canvas copies a theme and opens the copy in Canvas; the original stays editable in the standard theme editor, and the GeoBeacon embed stays where it was.
- Copy with Duplicate, not Duplicate in Canvas. If you want a copy to work on, the plain Duplicate action produces a theme that still opens in the theme editor, where App embeds, and GeoBeacon, are available.
Then enable the embed as usual: open the theme editor from GeoBeacon's Behaviour page, confirm GeoBeacon is switched on under App embeds and save. The no-VPN testing guide shows how to check that the popup or redirect fires on the published theme.
What to expect next
Canvas is early access, and Shopify's stated plan is to support theme app extensions before it becomes the default editor. We will update this post, and remove the Canvas notes inside the app, when that ships. Until then the rule is simple: if the theme has a Canvas badge, GeoBeacon cannot be enabled on it yet; if it does not, everything works as documented, and GeoBeacon is free to try.
